Annual South Solitary Island Tours for five days in July/August
South Solitary Island is located 18 km’s offshore north east from Coffs Harbour, NSW. The island contains a Lighthouse, Head Keeper’s Cottage and two Assistant Keeper’s Cottages which were built in 1880 and are considered the oldest in the area.
The Lighthouse was automated in 1975 and the remote island was abandoned. Access is only capable by helicopter and public access is restricted by National Parks and Wildlife.
• Only 1 of 2 island lighthouses in NSW
• Furthest lighthouse from the mainland
• First and last Kerosene light in NSW
• Island made up of 4 smaller islands
National Parks and Wildlife open the island to visitors for just two weekends a year. Approximately only 300 people are able to visit the island each year – this is a very exclusive event!
Tours Include:
• a return helicopter flight from Novotel Pacific Bay Resort
• interpretive guided tour on the island by National Parks and Wildlife Discovery Rangers.
The Lighthouse will be open this year (it wasn’t for last year’s tours), we have a representative from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority coming from Canberra to open the Lighthouse to visitors.
